Premium Organic Materials for Biomass Energy Production
At Africa Biomass Company, we specialize in producing premium dimensional wood chips for biomass energy production. With unparalleled experience in wood recycling and biomass production, we lead the industry in Southern Africa. By removing invasive alien trees, we create sustainable coal alternatives, setting the standard for innovative wood recycling practices.
Environmental Benefits of Biomass Energy in South Africa
Harnessing biomass energy in South Africa not only provides a renewable energy source, but also offers significant environmental benefits that contribute to a more sustainable future.
Ecological Impact
Harvesting and processing unwanted alien vegetation into a biomass end-product increases water runoff, decreases the risk of bushfires, reduces methane emissions, and restores natural vegetation.
Diverse Biomass End-Products for Versatile Applications
The various biomass end-products include dimensional wood chips for biomass to energy applications. It also includes high-speed shreds (also known as hog fuel) that can be used either as an alternative to dimensional chips or in the composting industry. Additionally, slow-speed shreds and billets are produced, ready to be used for the manufacturing of charcoal.
How Biomass Energy Helps Manufacturers
By integrating biomass energy into their operations, multinational manufacturers can advance towards their decarbonisation targets. At the same time, they contribute to broader environmental and socio-economic benefits for the communities in which they operate. Here’s how:
- Biomass energy lowers companies’ carbon footprint by providing a renewable and sustainable energy source.Â
- It supports the development of circular economies by utilising waste materials as feedstock.Â
- It enhances energy security by diversifying the energy mix.
- It promotes rural economic growth by creating new markets for biomass materials.
Is There Enough Biomass in South Africa?
Resource surveys conducted in the Western Cape, South Africa (audited by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research [CSIR]), confirm that there is ample biomass available. This biomass could potentially replace coal used by agri-industries in that province.
The surveys indicate that approximately 150,000 tonnes per annum of unwanted invasive alien trees in the riparian zones of the Breede, Zonderend, and Berg Rivers can be harvested for the next 20 years and beyond. Furthermore, sustainable biomass sources estimate that Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal far exceed the Western Cape.
Broiler House Heating
Africa Biomass Company conducted several physical trials demonstrating that modern wood-fired systems for heating broiler houses are significantly more efficient than traditional coal-fired heaters.
Wood chips present a viable alternative to coal in the poultry industry for centralised heating of broiler houses via central hot water boilers in hatcheries and broiler houses. They compete economically with coal but also surpass coal in all environmental aspects.

Bioenergy: The Most Cost-Effective and Green Fuel Option Available in the Industry
Multinational manufacturers are increasingly prioritising decarbonisation to meet stringent environmental regulations and align with global sustainability goals. One pivotal strategy in this drive is the utilisation of sustainably sourced biomass for energy production.Â
Biomass, derived from organic materials such as agricultural residues, forestry by-products, and dedicated energy crops, offers a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. When managed sustainably, biomass can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing a carbon-neutral energy source. This is because the CO² released during combustion is offset by the carbon absorbed during biomass growth.
